“What do I need to get started in metal detecting?” Well, one of the coolest things about metal detecting is that it doesn’t take much to get started in the hobby. You only need a few essential items to start finding treasures on your first hunt.
Most entry and mid-level metal detectors will find the types of targets that the average detectorist is looking for. Some metal detectors discriminate unwanted targets better than others, and some detectors go deeper than others, but for the most part you can use just about any intro level detector to get into the hobby.
There’s no need to spend a ton of money on a detector either because most modern metal detectors do a great job at finding metal items in the dirt at around six inches deep or more.
That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t educate yourself about the various models available before purchasing your gear though. What you buy will depend on the type of targets that you will be looking for, the locations that you will be detecting, such as at the beach or at parks and things like budget, and skill level.
Metal detectors with a numerical target identification screen help you better interpret targets before you dig by providing additional information along with the various tones.
