One of my favorite things to find are really old brass buttons. It’s always exciting to see them come out of the ground. They were easily lost, so pulling a really rare and valuable one from the ground is always a strong possibility. Here are just a few types of really rare ones that are recovered in the United States every year by detectorists like you and me:
During the Civil War, the US troops were much better outfitted than the Confederates. As a result, Confederate buttons are much more rare and valuable in general than Federal buttons. So, as exciting as finding a nice US Eagle button is, finding a Confederate button will pretty much cause your head to explode.
