One way to help you gain permission to hunt a piece of property is to take a spare metal detector with you. If the owner is hesitant in allowing you to detect his property, you can offer him to use your spare detector. That way if he always wanted to buy one and detect it himself, he will have the opportunity to do it for free. Who knows, you might just make a new friend and gain a detecting partner.
Most experienced detectorists also take a spare machine with them for the following reasons:
- In case of Failure of primary machine.
- Change of pace. Different machines seem to hit the ground differently, so switching machines can change your luck.
- Adapt for Site: Some machines hunt better in trash while others get more depth.
- Different size coils: Saves you the time of changing coils in the field if you already have a backup detector with a small coil for trash, or a large coil for hunted out sites on it.
