We all strive to become a better detectorist, so here’s 12 Secret Metal Detecting Tips for you to add to your detecting arsenal.
Dig those targets that don’t sound good or that you believe to be trash. By digging the trashy signals, you will be getting those items out of the way for your future hunts at that site. Some of those ‘iffy’ signals might actually be good targets like a ring or other jewelry items. One gold ring I found this year was an iffy signal that I thought was just another piece of foil. Imagine my surprise when I opened the plug and saw a gold & diamond ring laying there!
If your detector has a depth meter, watch it. If you get a signal that reads deep, and the site has produced “the goods” in the past, analyze it carefully, as it could be a deep keeper, or one that is in proximity to trash or iron.
Sometimes those ‘iffy’ targets turn out to be something really good, so if time permits be sure to dig some of those trashy sounding targets every now and then. You may be surprised at some of the goodies you find that others left behind simply because the target didn’t sound good.
