100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #93: Mississippi State Seal Watch Fob

Note:   In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  Watch fob with Mississippi state seal.   Eagle style says it is 1880-1920 era.

SITE:  Abandoned lot

SITE EVALUATION:  2 of 10.    Old home used to be here in the middle of an old, small Mississippi town.  Problem is it had junk cars parked all over it and the junk in the ground was enough to make you say “mother”.

PERMISSION:  Next door neighbor, an auto repair shop owner who owned the lot

Find a Hot Spot:  This lot was about 1.5 acres, and all my finds were in a 10 foot square area near the front.  The massive amount of car junk rendered most of the site useless.

Dig All Good and Iffy Signals around a Good find:  I dug a 1920 mercury dime, so I focused on the area around it.  The fob was deep, and I likely would have dismissed it as a deep car cigarette lighter or hood ornament had I not found the dime.

Not sure where that hotspot was.
