100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #81: Federal Civil War Staff Officer’s Button

100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #81: Federal Civil War Staff Officer’s Button

Note:   In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  Federal Staff Officer’s three piece button, in beautiful condition maintaining most of its gold “gilting”

SITE:  Yard on major battlefield

SITE EVALUATION: 9 of 10  This yard had clearly never been hunted and produced a lot of great relics

PERMISSION:   Extremely nice widow who was very happy to have me and my hunting partner around.

KEY PRINCIPLES:

Chaining Permissions:     I had knocked on a door 3 houses down.  That man had referred me to his neighbor, and that neighbor had referred me to this ladies next door neighbor.

Pause and Talk to Anyone:  I get lots of permission by pausing and speaking with anyone I can.  People walking dogs.  People with children.   Neighbors out in the yard.  In this instance, I actually saw this lady out in her yard as I hunted the adjacent edge of the next door neighbor’s yard.  I struck up a conversation and told her that I might come to visit her next.  And I did!
