100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #78: Silver Plated Suspender Clip

100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #78: Silver Plated Suspender Clip

Note:   In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  A silver-plated suspender clip that may have a religious theme.  Appears to have a scroll and crosses.  Very unusual according to several experts I’ve consulted.

SITE:  Yard in an old zoo.

SITE EVALUATION: 7 of 10  This was a fun yard that I doubt will ever be devoid of relics.

PERMISSION:   Referred by next door neighbor

KEY PRINCIPLES:

Every target that doesn’t lock on is not canslaw:    This clip was at about 6 inches, and I thought I was digging a piece of tin or can.  One of those targets that jumps around a lot between 50 and 70s.

Get close to the trees:   This was between two long exposed roots of a big tree.   Sometimes that can make for tough digging if its in or under other roots below the surface but I’ve dug a ton of stuff that is held nearer to the surface by roots, and that was skipped by other detectorists.  A small coil can let you get right up against a tree.
