100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #6 Civil War Saddle Tag

In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  This is a Federal Saddle Tag from a documented Civil War Saddle Supplier out of Cincinnati, Ohio.

SITE:  Yard on Battlefield

SITE EVALUATION: 9 of 10  My hunting partner got a Wisconsin Coat button here and a scabbard tip.

PERMISSION:  Homeowner was super nice.

KEY PRINCIPLES:

Dog Wires:  One of my machines is multi-frequency and this yard had dog wires.  I couldn’t keep it quiet on any channel.   By the time I switched to another machine, my hunting partner had gotten a Wisconsin button and a scabbard tip.

Dig Everything Mode:  I managed to get a couple of bullets, then went into everything mode.   When I site is golden, on the third scan I’m going to dig big iron and anything that is not iron.  This saddle tag gave a sound and numbers like foil, and was very shallow.  I was shocked that it was not trash.
