100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #53 1915 Barber Quarter

100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #53 1915 Barber Quarter

In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  Nice Barber Quarter.  I love the Barber series of coins.   This one is a cool one as it is the only one I’ve dug from the teens.

SITE:  My grandmother’s back yard

SITE EVALUATION: 7 of 10  Had probably never been hunted.  Lots of coins and other cool stuff.

PERMISSION:  If grandma won’t give you permission, you probably need to take up golf!

KEY PRINCIPLES:

Back vs Front Yard Paradigm:  I’ve heard many detectorists say they have more luck in back yards than front, and vice versa.  In my personal experience, back yards often seem trashier than fronts, but none of this really means anything.   I’ll acknowledge that it is amazing how back yards and front yards can be so incredibly different in the yard of an individual home.  Don’t let this get in your head though.  Hunt front, back and sides of every yard with equal determination.
