100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #27 1800s Pewter Plate

100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #27 1800s Pewter Plate

In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  Pictured with accompanying finds for that day, this is a really cool pewter plate with an oriental scene showing a figure with a monkey on his back is walking through a hayfield with a cat following behind.   Have not identified exactly or determined exact purpose, but most experts agree that it is at least from the middle 1800s.

SITE:  The site of an old mill.

SITE EVALUATION: 8 of 10  An incredible place to detect.

PERMISSION:  Public

KEY PRINCIPLES:

Clear the Way:  There was a pile of sticks and metal debris that I had ignored on previous hunts on this site.  I took the time to clear the debris and work through some of the iron and trash.  This resulted in several finds, including this plate.
