100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #24 1900 Barber Quarter

In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  A beautiful 1900 Barber Quarter.   It took me over 30 years to find a silver coin older than the year 1900.  In that time, I found three 1900 Barber Quarters, and a 1901.

SITE:  Old houseplace on family land in Mississippi.  No trace of this house place in the cultivated field where it once stood.   I learned about it from some family members who had moved the stones which had held the house up out of the field many years ago.  Researched and found out owner had fought in Civil War.   Didn’t find any Civil War relics, but hope to one day.

SITE EVALUATION: 5 of 10  Produced a few finds.   Will return and hunt again after the crops are harvested to see if anything new turns up!

Gridding: I don’t always like to grid a site, but since this was on my family’s land, I had the opportunity to take my time and hunt it thoroughly.

Hot Spots:  I found a small area in the center of the site that may have been where the front door or porch was.  I found several cool things there, including this quarter.
