100 FINDS IN 100 DAYS: #16 Rare Key Date 1895-O Barber Dime

In this series, we have selected 100 metal detecting finds that were extremely difficult to detect and recover, and provide details on the circumstances and techniques that contributed to their successful recovery.

KEEPER:  1895-O Barber Dime minted in New Orleans.  It is a rare coin in any condition.   Only a small quantity were minted in New Orleans, during the depression of 1894-5 and a relatively low quantity of examples survive.

SITE:  Back yard of House

SITE EVALUATION: 10 of 10  The best yard I’ve ever hunted as far as coins are concerned.  Produced 6 Indian cents, an 1869 shield nickel, and this rare beauty.

PERMISSION:  Homeowner told us to knock ourselves out.

Hot Spots: When I find something, I stick to the area or “line”.  In this instance, the coins were mostly in a line at the very back of the back yard near the hedges, all across the back yard at about the same distance from the back fence.  When you find something good, think about detecting hard and slowly in concentric circles around the find, and along the same lines parallel to the property lines.

You found the area directly under the clothes line. Pants were hung up by the cuff and anything in the pockets fell out. Whenever I go into an older lot I try to figure where the clothes line would have been – always find something there.

    Great find Clark.
