I’ve knocked on hundreds of doors asking for permission over the years. If there is one thing I’ve learned, it is to be prepared for anything. Being able to quickly identify the type of person you are speaking to and the corresponding permission approach is extremely important to getting as many Yes’s as possible. Here are most of the common categories of people we run into:
Young families with small children usually grant permission to detect fairly easily. It’s usually just about being friendly and putting them at ease. The kids are curious. The history is exciting. When I see kids toys and such out in the yard, I feel very comfortable knocking on the door, and pretty opimistic I’m going to get to detect the yard. Remember to ask the parents permission before giving the kids any detecting finds such as a coin, which usually seals the deal.
